As an artist, I gravitate towards the medium of photography due to its unique ability to provide an unaltered representation of real life events.
By capturing moments through the lens with a focus on manipulations of light and shadow, I am able to visually represent the multitude of layers to a story.
My focus on color, light, and both physical and metaphorical lines drawn across the images, not only depicts a vibrant culture, but also the reality of cultural intersectionality and the ensuing inner struggle. I traversed through my dual identity, and ultimately learned about myself as well.
In the work Echo, I photographed an obscured portrait of my mother’s silhouette reflected in her grandfather’s traditional Chinese painting. This work reveals the struggle to maintain an inner bridge to our traditional culture and past when crossing a physical bridge to a completely foreign atmosphere.
Within this series, some images show the outside shell of my identity that reflect common perceptions of the Chinese-American experience, while others visually narrate my family’s personal experiences, manifested in a domestic setting.
These select works exploring the interior and exterior, both physically and metaphorically, are aimed at inspiring a deeper understanding and appreciation for the complexity and real truth of the immigrant experience.
